Free Phone Consultation is a brief conversation used to determine if there is a good fit between you and the therapist you are potentially working with. This a great opportunity for the therapist to learn about you and what you’re looking for, as well as for you to ask any questions you might have for them. You should leave a consultation having addressed the following:

  1. What is prompting your call?
  2. What is the therapist style? (Session structure, direct/indirect, theories techniques, personality, models or interventions ect.)
  3. What about the financial stuff? (Fees and pricing, insurance, self-pay or sliding scale)
  4. What about availability? (How frequently and what times are needed/available)
  5. What happens next? (Prepare you for the first session)
  6. Any other questions you may have that weren’t covered? (This is a step you are taking for yourself so make sure you ask for what you need. This is your time.)

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Individual therapy, also known as individual psychotherapy or individual counseling is when the client and clinician meet one-on-one (usually for 45 minutes to 1 hour). It is encouraged to meet weekly especially in the beginning to establish relationship and build rapport between the client and the clinician. These meetings typically occur weekly or every other week, and are conducted in a confidential and caring environment. The clinician strives to create a safe place to encourage clients to explore their feelings, work through life challenges and transitions, identify aspects of themselves and their lives that they wish to change, and set goals to help them work towards these changes. There is no set time clock on therapy, some clients may attend only a few sessions and others may attend individual therapy sessions for a year or longer. The length of time is determined on the needs of the client because the ultimate goal is to get your needs met.

COUPLES THERAPY

Couples Therapy, also known as marriage counseling, premarital counseling or couples psychotherapy. Couples therapy helps people in all types of intimate relationships regardless of sexual orientation or relationship/marriage status. Some people seek couples counseling to strengthen their partnership and gain a better understanding of each other. Couple’s counseling can also help couples who plan to get married. Premarital counseling can help couples achieve a deeper understanding of each other, further strengthen their foundation and obtain clarity on values before marriage. Couples counseling is also used to improve relationships that are going through a difficult time. You can use couple’s counseling to help with many specific issues, including:

  • Communication problems
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Conflicts about child rearing or blended families
  • Substance abuse
  • Anger
  • Infidelity
  • And more

GROUP THERAPY

Group Therapy involves one or more therapist who lead a group clients working on a similar issue. Typically, groups meet for 1-2 hours per week and are designed to target a specific problem, such as depression, body image, self-esteem, social anxiety, chronic pain, grief ect. while improving social and coping skills. Groups act as a support network and a sounding board of various perspectives and experiences. Group members may help you come up with specific ideas for improving a difficult situation or life challenge, consider another perspective and hold you accountable. Being in a group with people working through the sam issue can be helpful because it a reminder, that you though you may feel like you are the only one struggling, you’re not. It can be a relief to hear others discuss what they’re going through, and realize you’re not alone. People have different personalities and diverse backgrounds, and they look at situations in different ways and bring that to the group. Seeing how other people tackle problems differently and make positive changes can normalize the experience and the process of change while helping you discover a whole range of skills to handle your own situation.

TELETHERAPY

Teletherapy is mental health counseling over the phone or online. Due to the convenience for both the client and the therapist, more therapist are incorporating virtual mental health services into their practices. Most research suggests that teletherapy works just as well as in-person counseling. Teletherapy can look like:

  • Doing therapy sessions over the phone
  • Using videoconferencing for individual, couples, or group therapy

The benefits of teletherapy are:

  • Greater Access to Care– it expands access to those who can’t access traditional therapy due to geography, scheduling issues and/or physical disabilities.
  • Potentially Lower Cost-Clients are likely to incur fewer therapy-associated expenses when they do not have to travel to receive treatment or pay for child care.
  • More Potential Privacy: utilizing teletherapy removes the need to sit in busy waiting rooms because clients can seek treatment in the privacy of their own homes which for some alleviates privacy concerns.
  • Better Public Health: Due to the COVID-19 health crisis utilizing teletherapy can slow the spread of illness and protect vulnerable populations by allowing people to get mental health treatment at home without risking the spread of infection.

EMDR

EMDR is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing which is a psychotherapy treatment that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. Studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health.  If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes.
